Parents of Grade 11 students were asked to read Their Eyes Were Watching God, as this book is one that is used in the curriculum of both the IB Literature and the IB Language and Literature classes. Parents then met to discuss the novel as a group. The evening was hosted Rolla Hamade, in her home, and the discussion was led by DAA High School’s head of department and IB English teacher, Uzay Ashton.
The parents seemed to really enjoy the book and they were excited about discussing it with others and also learning what their children were learning. Everyone had something to contribute and by the end of the evening they were in talks as to whether they could do this again! The group said, “We are all book nerds, and we’re proud of it!”
DAA’s elementary school also invited parents to come to school and help their child learn.
