Dr. Karen Mapp on Making a Difference

A good home learning environment, in which parents encourage and develop their child, has an astonishing impact on performance – up to 21 per cent increases in literacy and 16 per cent increases in numeracy by the age of five (source: Early Childhood Matters: Evidence from the Effective Pre-school and Primary Education Project). According to a 2011 PISA report, the positive impacts continue into the later years when parents talk to their teenage students about education, current events and life in general.
